    Hamlet

Hamlet is a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy by Kolkata-based theatre group Swapnasandhani, directed by Koushik Sen. Presented by the Kolkata Centre for Creativity as part of AMI Arts Festival 2026, the production reimagines the classic within the socio-political realities of contemporary India.

The play explores themes of power, betrayal, morality, justice, ambition, political violence, memory and the burden of choice. Drawing inspiration from Jacques Derrida’s Specters of Marx, the production treats the ghost as a representation of history, memory and unresolved injustice.

The performance brings Shakespeare’s story into conversation with the anxieties of the present while examining the consequences of violence, conflict and the loss of innocence.
