NCPA Masterclass by Guru Sharmila Biswas – STHITI
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, presents a two-day masterclass led by renowned Odissi dancer, choreographer and researcher Guru Sharmila Biswas on 12 and 13 November 2026.
STHITI is an integral part of Sharmila Biswas’s specialised training curriculum for dancers. Inspired by the Gotipua tradition of Odisha, the practice combines elements of dance and yoga to develop strength, flexibility, balance, stamina and precision while deepening awareness of the body and the principles of Odissi.
The NCPA masterclass will focus on Tribhangi, the characteristic three-bend posture of Odissi. Participants will explore its physical and rhythmic vocabulary, including posture, torso movement, balance, flexibility and flow. The session approaches these elements as an integrated movement practice, helping dancers strengthen their technique and develop a deeper understanding of Odissi’s expressive and musical qualities.
The composition’s musical arrangement is by Sukanta Kumar Kundu, with rhythm composition by Bijaya Kumar Barik. Sharmila Biswas’s work in developing the composition has been guided by Smita Dutta in Hatha Yoga.
