Nirgun Notes: A Musical Presentation in Gujarati
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, presents Nirgun Notes, a Gujarati musical programme exploring the rich traditions of devotional music and poetry.
Indian philosophy describes two paths to experiencing the divine: sagun, in which divinity is understood through form and attributes, and nirgun, which expresses the divine as formless and beyond attributes. This presentation explores the spiritual and musical traditions associated with bhakti, bringing together devotional compositions and regional folk influences.
The programme features Himali Vyas Naik, a versatile singer trained in light music under Purushottam Upadhyay, with additional experience in Indian classical, semi-classical and Western music. Her repertoire spans Bollywood, experimental music, films and theatre.
The musical selection includes the prabhatiyas of Narsinh Mehta and bhajans associated with Gangasati, Bhago Charan, Toli Rani, Meerabai and other devotional poets, alongside regional folk forms. Chintan Naik, an accomplished anchor and poet, will compère the event.
Through poetry, melody and devotional expression, Nirgun Notes offers audiences an opportunity to experience Gujarat’s spiritual and musical heritage.
