Papa Painter is a theatrical production presented by Kolkata Centre for Creativity as part of AMI Arts Festival 2026. Directed by Ajeet Singh Pallawat, the play is written and performed by Vijay Ashok Sharma.
The story follows a small family from rural Rajasthan who boards a train in search of a better future. As the son adapts to a changing world faster than his father, a quiet distance begins to develop between them. The son's journey gradually moves from knowing someone simply as “Papa” to discovering the individual behind that familiar word.
Set in 1990s India, the production draws on memories of ration cards, PCO booths, Doordarshan, Shaktimaan, cycle bells and Bajaj scooters. These everyday details provide a nostalgic backdrop while the play examines migration, aspiration, family, identity and changing relationships.
At its core, Papa Painter is an intimate exploration of the father-son relationship and the ways our understanding of our parents evolves as we grow older.
