Swang: Jas ki Tas
Presented as part of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) Festival 2026, Swang: Jas ki Tas brings the traditional Indian folk-theatre form of Swang to the stage. The production is based on Vijayan Detha’s story Thakur Ka Roothna and comes from Abalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
Blending humour, music, song and dance with social satire, the play revolves around a powerful Thakur, or landlord, who frequently takes offence and makes unreasonable decisions. Since he rules over several villages, the people are forced to obey his commands.
The conflict escalates when the Thakur orders every water-filled well in the village to be filled with sand, leaving the villagers distressed and without access to their essential water source. Seeking a solution, they approach Badi-Maaji, setting the stage for a series of humorous events that also expose the consequences of unchecked authority.
Rooted in folk storytelling, Swang: Jas ki Tas combines entertainment with a critical reflection on power, arbitrary decisions and the lives of ordinary people.
