The Departed Dawn
Presented as part of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) Festival 2026, The Departed Dawn is a non-verbal theatrical production from Imphal, Manipur, exploring the human cost of forced displacement.
Inspired by the global refugee crisis, the production draws on the experiences of the Lhotsampa community, Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees. It begins with a journey in search of a place to call home and follows the hardships involved in building a peaceful life. When external forces threaten that home, the community is driven away, forced to carry its memories and belongings into an uncertain future.
Through non-verbal storytelling, the production explores loss, displacement, survival, belonging and the longing to return to a home that may no longer exist as it once did.
