The legendary festival of Vaikathashtami culminates on December 1, 2026, at the historic Vaikom Mahadeva Temple in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Celebrated over twelve glorious days during the month of Vrischikam, this cultural extravaganza centers around one of Kerala's oldest shrines, affectionately revered as the "Dakshinakasi of the south" due to its centuries of uninterrupted rituals. The event showcases rich regional traditions, including vibrant Panchavadyam percussion ensembles, sacred elephant feedings (Aanayoottu), and all-night Kathakali performances. Commemorating a divine boon granted to Sage Vyaghrapada, the festival reaches its visual peak during the grand Ashtami Vilakku illumination and the touching 'Udayanapurathappante Varavu' ritual, where Lord Muruga's procession arrives from a neighboring shrine to pay homage to his father, Lord Shiva, amidst a sea of glowing oil lamps and roaring crowds.
